Food Bank of Delaware Volunteer Spotlight
At the Food Bank of Delaware, volunteers like William Shupe are at the core of our mission. William’s path to volunteering began when he moved from Philadelphia to Milford. Having always enjoyed volunteering through coaching Little League and football, he wanted to continue giving back. After settling in Delaware, William sought out volunteer opportunities and quickly found his place at the Food Bank, where he now volunteers twice a week.
For William, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the connection he forms with the people he helps. Working in the Healthy Pantry, he enjoys interacting with individuals and families, often having conversations that go beyond just handing out food. "Some people don’t have anyone to talk to, and you get to talk to them," William shares.
One of William’s favorite activities is stocking the shelves, particularly during the 8-9 a.m. shift. His past experience working in a grocery store in Philadelphia has given him skills that he applies to his volunteer work. He enjoys the process of organizing and ensuring that the shelves are fully stocked, and he finds the entire experience rewarding, especially when he sees the appreciation from those he serves. He says that the thank-you’s, the smiles, and the positive feedback are constant reminders that his work is truly making a difference.
William also wants to highlight the high-quality produce and food that the Food Bank provides. “The good produce and food that we give them in the baskets—it's all good stuff, good quality,” he says, emphasizing the importance of the resources we provide to the community.
For anyone considering volunteering, William encourages others to get involved, sharing that volunteering has helped him stay active and feel engaged with the community after retirement. "It helps with talking to people, and it makes me feel like I am doing something," he says. William is a testament to the many ways volunteering can bring fulfillment and connection.
If you’re inspired by William’s story, consider joining our volunteer team. There are many different areas to get involved in, and every effort helps us continue to fight hunger and serve the community. Visit our website to learn more about how you can get involved.
